The last week started out pretty hectic, trying to finish off our assignments.
Monday consisted of printing the last of the Hockneys. We then made frames to stretch our maps assignments onto, this meant getting hands on in the woodwork room. After this we did final touch ups on the assignment and started printing them. At the same time we were all adding the finishing touches to our Fire proposals which had to be sent off by 2pm that day. I managed to finish and send my proposal off with about 15 minutes to spare.
On Tuesday night those selected to take part in the winter arts projection program went along to a meeting with Jenny and Ian De Gruchy. The few of us that went got a lot out of the night. Ian, has been kind enough to give his time every year to this project. He showed us a range of his own projection works from around Australia and the World, then gave us an idea of what sorts of works we need to produce. we were all given a CD with a template of the building to work off. Later i discovered that i was given a blank CD, but luckily Lauren will be able to give me the files on Thursday. Overall though it was a great night.
Thursday mornings class we got given our feedback from Jenny on our fire proposals. My feedback seemed pretty good, a few things i am changing but mostly she seemed to like my idea and thinks it would work well as an installation as well as the stand alone video at Federation Square and in Dandenong. /New, re-sized pieces of wood for frames for the maps assignment were given out, not mine though so David printed my image again on Friday at Dandy.
The rest of the day we finished off our after effects videos, and rendered them out. mine was quite simple with hearts beating and moving around to the music. I'm still finding After Effects a little confusing, but I've never used any kind of video software before.
On Friday we worked on a project we were given by Simon about emotions the previous week. My idea is based around togetherness. My design is of two trees growing next to each other who have grown together, their branches entwining. I'm nearly finished, just gonna add more branches, and change the colours of the trees. Then i think i might try a different concept that might be quick to have a go at.
After all that we have a bunch of things to work on throughout the holidays, including a video essay with a theme of our choice. should be interesting.

Maps Assignment
For the first few weeks we had to do the maps assignment i pretty much clueless of what we were meant to do for it. After a while and many more explanations i started to come up with some ideas, but none i really liked or could get to work. Then i just started putting layers together starting with an old map. My idea then turned towards faces, which then lead to my grandpa, the photos are of him, and there is also a daffodil and cancer ribbon in it. as he died of cancer a few years ago. As interpretation by others goes, i don't mind if they don't fully understand it, yet they may be able to connect in someway, others wont but they will still get something out of the image.
This is my finished product :)

From Monday class.
I feel like we're really starting to get into everything now. i think the Hockney assignments have turned out great for everyone, from what I've seen. My city one turned out better than my first one, i tried something a little different instead of a patch of photos i started from the ground in front of my feet, and took the photos connecting up in a line up to the sky and back down the wall behind me to create a panoramic view. This idea turned out quite well, its set up on a black background and for printing purposes there will be 3 of the same long image next to each other.
I've finally started to get the idea with the maps assignment and started to put together photographic layers and scanned in some fronttage drawings which i am yet to add into the image. Hopefully it wont look too haphazardess once I'm done.
I am a little stuck with my fire assignment proposal, slowly coming along but feel like I"m lacking a lot in it. The personal profile bit seems a little strange to me but I am working through it as best as i can.

Fire research.
I've been thinking a bit about the fire assignment, and how i plan on making it work.
Firstly I've decided to mesh my 2 original ideas to form my plans for now. I am going with the whole freedom of speech idea and where i am going to burn some old looking books, or maybe just one. This will be in the foreground, in the background i plan on having a person trying to get their point of view across in the form of a speech, in a way that they're crying out to be heard. I will then use something to slowly defuse the flaming book/s, an idea could be either a solid object like a glass container to stop oxygen, or something like sand or water. As the flames dissipate i plan on making the voice of the person slowly diminish at the same rate as the fire, until the persons face is crying out words, but no sound is coming out. This could then be played backwards to re-ignite the flames and the speech to its full scale, which could then be looped.
For materials i plan on looking at opportunity shops, garage sales, ect. to find old books to use as the burning objects. i will also need to figure out what method i will use to put out the fire, and experiment with these ideas. i will also need to look into what is being said by the person and what political, racial, or national issue they could be talking about ( I am leaning towards the nazi Germany during the war), and figure out a speech. i also need to think about how i will start the fire and keep it burning, as well as the setting for shooting these videos.

city excursion.
Besides a little confusion at the start of the day, the excursion turned out quite well. i really enjoyed the ACMI exhibition, it showed how the world of film and media has changed so much over the years. there were also a lot of fun things to get involved in including a matrix video.
I think i got a few good photos especially in hosier lane. i took my photos for the David Hockney montage, i also tried something different where i started at the ground, went up the wall around past the sky back down the wall behind me and back to the ground taking photos which i plan on joining together, hopefully creating a 3D effect. I also took a few random shots around the lane way and the rest of the city.

i love how this image draws the eye towards the door surrounded by a lot of chaotic graffiti with the simple image that looks a bit like a rose. |

I took a photo of a small section of this piece of graffiti desaturated 1 copy and alternated the colored and desaturated images |

fire assignment
i have 2 main ideas for my video that im going to decide between.
- the burning of old literature, with influences from the wars and the lack of freedom that certain races have to do with speech and writing.
or
- having a flame that gets covered by a glass container making the flames dissipate to nothing while a person is trying to talk and the sound lowers so that you cant hear their voice anymore.
i plan on doing research on both and decide which idea will be most effective, and i can work with efficiently.
