Jerry Uelsmann

For this assignment we had to create surreal photos based on the photographs by Jerry Uelsmann. My eye image isn't really related but i had fun making it. My other image I'm not overly happy with and plan on making something else, but i will post that soon, when i have the right format.

its a bit tricky to see with this image but there is a building in the eye.

Cindy Sherman photos

I enjoyed this assignment quite a lot! Lauren and I worked together to help each other with our images. We spent two full days shooting the photos, and had a lot of fun creating the different personalities :)
Here are the results of my photos.

The teacher

The substance abuser

The ballerina

The prostitute

The 60's wealthy woman

The hippy

First big shoe.

Part of the drawing component includes 3 large scale shoe drawings, this is the first one of mine. i used ink as the outline on the page then ripped out sections of another piece of paper for the patterned and inside sections of the shoe.

Lino cuts

here is the final out comes of my lino designs. printing embosses and ink prints:

First Lino print.

i thought id show how my first little lino print turned out :)

Lino cut - totem

Ok so i never thought it would be this hard cut out our lino designs, i think the fact that i picked up a dodgy cutting tool didn't help much. i think everyone will come to class tomorrow with sore hands from cutting out their designs, and who has cut themselves with the cutting tools like me and Lauren already have. Anyway i thought id show my progress with it, I've nearly finished cutting out the design ready to print it on Friday. It's quite a messy job doing this with bits of lino flying all over the room.

Overview of semester 2:

Well we definitely came into semester 2 with no ideas of taking things slowly! the assignments we have in store for this semester seem quite interesting, personally the Cindy Sherman homage stands out to me the most, it looks like a lot of fun and can't wait to get into it. I'm a little apprehensive about the drawing side of things which seems a lot more involved in this semesters work. It's in nearly every assignment and we have a straight drawing assignment which probably won't work out very well for me but I'll try my best. there's a few new things as well like lino printing which i haven't done before. Well i guess ill just have to wait and see how things go..

Lego mini figure.

So after a long long time of frustration and confusion working through our lego figures i finally finished my figure the second week of the holidays and and so glad to have handed it in!! it turned out quite well in the end. It doesn't look much like me, but it is a lego figure so i guess that's a good thing.. the UV template took me a long time because i re-did everything about 10 times because i didn't like how it turned out even though it still looked pretty much the same from the first attempt to the last. well here's what the final product looks like..

Fire Video.

I was pretty excited to see that I'd been selected to have my video played at federation square. This seems like a great opportunity to show off my work :) It's a little sad that Maddy and Seb miss out because of something wrong with their files, since David should of done everyone's the same, i thought..
Anyway can't wait to see my work there and in Dandenong.

Fire assignment.

I completely freaked out after problems with my hard drive last night, and not having the images for my video today. thankfully David is letting me drop it off to him tomorrow morning at Dandenong so I've been working strong this afternoon to get it done, now all i have to do is render it, and burn it to a disc :) the part that takes the time.

Sydney Trip:

Sydney trip is getting pretty close, seemed like a long time away when we first got told about it, but time has flown by very fast!!!
I think we'll have a lot of fun on the trip and i can't wait to photograph Sydney! Looking through the plan for what we are going to do, it seems like a lot of great things planned for us, some probably aren't really my kind of thing but you never know, i might end up loving them.
as far as transport and packing goes I'm a little concerned about how we're suppose to fit everything wee need for 4 days in a tiny bag. We all need to bring camera equipment which can take up room, plus clothes and toiletries. we'll see how i go with that, might have to wear all my clothes on the plan and get stopped by security for looking dodgy.
But hopefully we all have a lot of fun and get a lot out of the experience.

Fire Assignment Progress..

I have finished all the photos for it, stop motion, really is time consuming!! and i dont think my footage will make it to the 5 minute mark, not even the 3 minute mark...
after days of getting ideas onto paper, and photographing it i hope it turns out alright. after the long process of uploading the images, now comes to the editing and forming a video. thought there a re a few things im not sure about in terms of the editing process... but hopefully i can figure it out.
All in all i just hope it turns out looking alright, fingers crossed! I'll be spending the rest of tonight and all tomorrow sitting in front of this computer trying to finish off this project, and hopefully it works!!!

Second David Hockney image

I was finally able to get my second David Hockney style photo to be uploaded to the blog!! took a long long time but with Laurens help we finally got it to work :)
i like how this image turned out, its done by taking photos ina  row of a 360 view of the alley way in the city.  Asits a very long image i duplicated it twice to make 3 images in a row for the whole image.

Inspiration for photo essay.

my theme for the photo essay is water here are some inspiration images for my theme:

i plan on working with water in a range of contexts.

Fire video

I am starting work on my fire video, i have my final idea and the equipment to get started. I have decided to do a stop motion film of a book, in which i will be circling and highlighting words and phrases on the pages that are relivant to my idea. i will also on some pages be writing words and drawing pictures such as fire. i will be doing it in a sketchy style, with rough circling and drawing. i hope this works well and that i can get enough footage to fill the 5 minute minimum time frame.
i have also decided on my final idea for my installation which will be coverring th ewalls with pages from books, some screwed up some with edges burnt and some with words circled or written on.

David Hockney referance

One of the concepts we worked with at the start of the year was David Hockneys work with montages. He created montages of images by taking many photos in a of one larger image to great one whole image. here is an example of his work:

this shows how he uses multiple connecting images of a scene to creat a whole image.
With my second hockney i used this idea and changed it a little, by taking a 360 view of graffiti between buildings in one line. i will post that to the blog soon.

how things are shaping up...

this week we have a lot to finish getting up to date, though its a little unfortunate David hasnt been here to help us. we have a lot due on monday, most of which i have completed. I still have to strech my canvas, as do the rest of the class, which we all need assistance with. i also have to finish re-doing my photo essay to post to the blog as it didnt get saved properly :( i am starting to film my my fire video this weekend, hopefully it wont take too long to do! one thing im not quite sure on is on our assessment sheet it says proposal and installation/screening of video, i'm not quite sure what this means as we have sent off our proposals for the installation and video to jenny quite a while ago, so i guess ill have to wait till monday to find out which is inconvenient as thats when its due...
overall things are going quite well :) i had fun working on the HDR images.

HDR

I had a fun day going out to take photos for the HDR project. We walked along the Frankston fore shore and managed to get some great photos. i didnt have a tripod but still managed to get photos lined up nicely thanks to my steady hand :) here are some of them :)

After Effects Video

This was and assignment where we had to create a short animation using simple images. To create it we used a range of transformations to move images around the screen. I decided to use hearts and movd them around to the beat of the music finishing with an arrow. It's not the best quality but it was a good way to learn the techniques.

Stop motion video: Brucey B

finally able to upload my video to youtube so it works on here :)

Last week Term 1

The last week started out pretty hectic, trying to finish off our assignments.
Monday consisted of printing the last of the Hockneys. We then made frames to stretch our maps assignments onto, this meant getting hands on in the woodwork room. After this we did final touch ups on the assignment and started printing them. At the same time we were all adding the finishing touches to our Fire proposals which had to be sent off by 2pm that day. I managed to finish and send my proposal off with about 15 minutes to spare.

On Tuesday night those selected to take part in the winter arts projection program went along to a meeting with Jenny and Ian De Gruchy. The few of us that went got a lot out of the night. Ian, has been kind enough to give his time every year to this project. He showed us a range of his own projection works from around Australia and the World, then gave us an idea of what sorts of works we need to produce. we were all given a CD with a template of the building to work off. Later i discovered that i was given a blank CD, but luckily Lauren will be able to give me the files on Thursday. Overall though it was a great night.

Thursday mornings class we got given our feedback from Jenny on our fire proposals. My feedback seemed pretty good, a few things i am changing but mostly she seemed to like my idea and thinks it would work well as an installation as well as the stand alone video at Federation Square and in Dandenong. /New, re-sized pieces of wood for frames for the maps assignment were given out, not mine though so David printed my image again on Friday at Dandy.
The rest of the day we finished off our after effects videos, and rendered them out. mine was quite simple with hearts beating and moving around to the music. I'm still finding After Effects a little confusing, but I've never used any kind of video software before.

On Friday we worked on  a project we were given by Simon about emotions the previous week. My idea is based around togetherness. My design is of two trees growing next to each other who have grown together, their branches entwining. I'm nearly finished, just gonna add more branches, and change the colours of the trees. Then i think i might try a different concept that might be quick to have a go at.

After all that we have a bunch of things to work on throughout the holidays, including a video essay with a theme of our choice. should be interesting.

Maps Assignment

For the first few weeks we had to do the maps assignment i pretty much clueless of what we were meant to do for it. After a while and many more explanations i started to come up with some ideas, but none i really liked or could get to work. Then i just started putting layers together starting with an old map. My idea then turned towards faces, which then lead to my grandpa, the photos are of him, and there is also a daffodil and cancer ribbon in it. as he died of cancer a few years ago. As interpretation by others goes, i don't mind if they don't fully understand it, yet they may be able to connect in someway, others wont but they will still get something out of the image.
This is my finished product :)

From Monday class.

I feel like we're really starting to get into everything now. i think the Hockney assignments have turned out great for everyone, from what I've seen. My city one turned out better than my first one, i tried something a little different instead of a patch of photos i started from the ground in front of my feet, and took the photos connecting up in a line up to the sky and back down the wall behind me to create a panoramic view. This idea turned out quite well, its set up on a black background and for printing purposes there will be 3 of the same long image next to each other.

this is my first David Hockney photo

I've finally started to get the idea with the maps assignment and started to put together photographic layers and scanned in some fronttage drawings which i am yet to add into the image. Hopefully it wont look too haphazardess once I'm done.

I am a little stuck with my fire assignment proposal, slowly coming along but feel like I"m lacking a lot in it. The personal profile bit seems a little strange to me but I am working through it as best as i can.

Fire research.

I've been thinking a bit about the fire assignment, and how i plan on making it work.
Firstly I've decided to mesh my 2 original ideas to form my plans for now. I am going with the whole freedom of speech idea and where i am going to burn some old looking books, or maybe just one. This will be in the foreground, in the background i plan on having a person trying to get their point of view across in the form of a speech, in a way that they're crying out to be heard. I will then use something to slowly defuse the flaming book/s, an idea could be either a solid object like a glass container to stop oxygen, or something like sand or water. As the flames dissipate i plan on making the voice of the person slowly diminish at the same rate as the fire, until the persons face is crying out words, but no sound is coming out. This could then be played backwards to re-ignite the flames and the speech to its full scale, which could then be looped.

For materials i plan on looking at opportunity shops, garage sales, ect. to find old books to use as the burning objects. i will also need to figure out what method i will use to put out the fire, and experiment with these ideas. i will also need to look into what is being said by the person and what political, racial, or national issue they could be talking about ( I am leaning towards the nazi Germany during the war), and figure out a speech. i also need to think about how i will start the fire and keep it burning, as well as the setting for shooting these videos.

city excursion.

Besides a little confusion at the start of the day, the excursion turned out quite well. i really enjoyed the ACMI exhibition, it showed how the world of film and media has changed so much over the years. there were also a lot of fun things to get involved in including a matrix video.
I think i got a few good photos especially in hosier lane. i took my photos for the David Hockney montage, i also tried something different where i started at the ground, went up the wall around past the sky back down the wall behind me and back to the ground taking photos which i plan on joining together, hopefully creating a 3D effect. I also took a few random shots around the lane way and the rest of the city.
i love how this image draws the eye towards the door surrounded by a lot of chaotic graffiti with the simple image that looks a bit like a rose.

I took a photo of a small section of this piece of graffiti desaturated 1 copy and alternated the colored and desaturated images

My stop motion video didnt save, so im going to have to re make it :(

fire assignment

i have 2 main ideas for my video that im going to decide between.

- the burning of old literature, with influences from the wars and the lack of freedom that certain races have to do with speech and writing.

or

- having a flame that gets covered by a glass container making the flames dissipate to nothing while a person is trying to talk and the sound lowers so that you cant hear their voice anymore.

i plan on doing research on both and decide which idea will be most effective, and i can work with efficiently.
